Why I sang in the wrong key for two years
For a long time I thought I knew my range. Someone at a choir rehearsal told me I was "probably a tenor", and I ran with it. I did warmups from YouTube built for that mystery tenor. Some of them did nothing. Some of them left my throat tight for the rest of the day. Sounds familiar?
It wasn't until I sat down at a keyboard and actually measured that I found out my comfortable low note was A2, which most charts file under baritone. Nobody had ever asked me to check. They'd just guessed.
Most guides answer "how do I find my vocal range?" in three lines and stop. That part is genuinely easy, and I'll get through it quickly. What almost nobody tells you is what the number is for. So this post has two halves: getting the number, and then putting it to work so your exercises stop fighting you.
Finding your range in ten minutes
You need a piano app or a tuner app on your phone. With a piano you match the note you're singing. With a tuner you sing and it reads the note name back to you. Either works. Here's the whole process:
- Warm up for two or three minutes: humming, lip trills, gentle sirens up and down. Cold folds hide your real range, especially at the top.
- Start on a note in the middle of your speaking voice and sing down one step at a time. Stop when the sound stops being singing and starts being a growl or a rattle. The last clean note is your low.
- Go back to the middle and sing up one step at a time. Stop at the last note you can hold for four seconds without your neck, jaw or shoulders getting involved. That's your high.
- Write both down with the octave number (A2, not just A). The number matters more than you'd think, and I'll explain why in a minute.
- Do the whole thing again this evening.
Why twice? Because your range moves. First thing in the morning the voice sits lower and the top is stiff. By the evening, after a day of talking, the top loosens up and the bottom sometimes disappears. Neither reading is wrong. Together they tell you the truth.
Quick tip: the range you're after is the comfortable one, not the extreme one. Everyone can squeak out something absurdly high and growl something absurdly low. Those notes aren't useful for anything except party tricks. If you can't hold it steady for a few seconds, it doesn't count.
What A2 to E5 actually means
Note names on their own are ambiguous. There are seven or eight different As on a piano. So we add an octave number, and the system is simpler than it looks: C4 is middle C, the C roughly in the centre of a piano keyboard. Everything from that C up to the B above it is octave 4. The next C up starts octave 5. The C below middle C starts octave 3, and so on.
One thing that trips people up: the number changes at C, not at A. So B3 sits directly below C4. If you're counting on a keyboard and the numbers seem to jump in a strange place, that's why.

Now the example from my own measurement makes sense. A2 to E5 is: A2 up to A4 (two full octaves), then A4 up to E5 (a fifth, or seven semitones). Two octaves plus most of a third one, which is why an app will call it about 2.6 octaves. For reference, A2 vibrates at about 110 Hz and E5 at about 659 Hz. Each octave doubles the frequency, which is also why the top of your range feels so much further away than the bottom does.
Most untrained adults land somewhere between 1.5 and 2 octaves of comfortable range. Two and a half is decent. Three is a lot. If you measured less than 1.5, don't panic: that's the cold, untrained reading, and it grows.
Voice types: where the voice sits, not how far it reaches
Once you have two note names you'll want to know what you are. Here are the rough comfortable ranges for the classical voice types. Treat them as neighbourhoods, not borders.
- Bass: E2 to E4
- Baritone: A2 to A4
- Tenor: C3 to C5
- Contralto (alto): F3 to F5
- Mezzo-soprano: A3 to A5
- Soprano: C4 to C6
Here's the catch. Voice type isn't decided by your extremes. It's decided by two other things: where your voice sits (the part of the range where you can sing for twenty minutes without tiring, what teachers call tessitura) and its colour (a tenor and a baritone singing the same G4 sound like different instruments). Two singers can share identical outer notes and be different types.
My A2 to E5 is a good example. The A2 says baritone. But my voice sits comfortably higher than that, and the top is easy up to E5, which is why the app in the screenshots below files it as typical for a tenor. Both answers are partly right. Don't tattoo either of them anywhere.
Your range is a measurement. Your voice type is an interpretation. Only one of them goes in your exercises.
The part nobody answers: what the number is for
Here's where most guides end and where the real problem starts. You've got your range written on a sticky note. Now what?
A range is only useful if your exercises start from it. That's the whole point of measuring. And almost every free warmup out there was recorded in one fixed key for one imaginary singer.
Take a typical five-note scale warmup on YouTube. It often starts around C4 and climbs step by step to somewhere near G5. That's built for a soprano or a high mezzo. Now hand it to a baritone whose comfortable top is A4. Two things happen, and both are bad:
Too high: from about B4 upward the baritone is past their comfortable top, so they push. The larynx rises, the jaw clamps, the neck helps out. And because they repeat this every day, they're not training the voice. They're training the strain.
Too low: flip it around. A soprano doing a warmup written for a bass spends the first half of it below F3, where the folds barely close and the sound is a breathy mumble. Nothing happens. Ten minutes gone, zero benefit.
I get that this sounds like a small detail. It isn't. It's the difference between an exercise that builds your voice and one that either wastes your time or slowly damages it.
But here's the trick: the fix is transposition. Move the exercise so it begins near your comfortable low and stops near your comfortable high. On a keyboard that means recalculating every scale every time, which nobody does for more than a week. The exercise has to do the moving for you.

The "hold the note until the waves calm down" instruction is doing something important. It filters out the squeak and the growl automatically. If you can't sustain a note steadily for a couple of seconds, it won't register, which is precisely the comfortable-not-extreme rule from earlier, enforced by the software rather than your willpower.
Once both notes are in, you get the result: the two note names, the octave span, and the voice type the range is typical for. Note the wording. It says typical for, not "you are". And right underneath it reminds you the range moves with warmup, training and time of day.

That's also why there's a Redo detection link right there. Your range after a month of practice won't be your range today, and your range at 7am isn't your range at 7pm. Redo it whenever it feels off. If you'd rather skip the singing, you can also just pick a voice type from the list and start with its default range.
Then the part that actually matters. From that moment on, every scale and every routine transposes to fit. Here's a five-note scale ready to go. No recalculating. No guessing which key the video was in. The exercise lives inside your voice by default. And if you sing in the subharmonic, flageolet or whistle registers, you can set a separate range for each of those, so the scales there fit too.

What to do this month
Now, let's talk about turning all this into a habit rather than a one-off. Three things, nothing more:
- Measure twice a week for a month. Once in the morning, once in the evening, after a short warmup. Eight readings tell you far more than one.
- Write down the comfortable range, not the extreme one. If the note wobbles or your neck helps, it doesn't count.
- Pick exercises that live inside that range. Whether that's Scalita, a teacher who transposes for you, or a keyboard and some patience, the scale has to start where your voice starts.
After a month you'll notice two things. The range readings will start to agree with each other, which means you've found your real working range. And the top will have crept up a semitone or two, not because you pushed, but because every exercise finally started in the right place.
